DANCE AWAY DIABETES

From mambos and cha-chas to kicks and hip circles, dance workouts such as salsa, jazz, and hip-hop offer a fun way to burn calories and whittle your waistline. In fact, a study from Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island found that dancing provides benefits similar to those you’d get from a walk-jog exercise program.

Many health clubs and community colleges offer dance classes, as do private dance studios. If you’re too bashful to bust a move in front of others, check out the dance and fitness DVD collection at your local library or online. We’ve suggested DVDs for each dance style. If you prefer something more eclectic, check out Prevention’s fitness video Dance Yourself Thin (www.danceyourselfthin.com).

Belly dancing: As you might imagine, the emphasis of this high-intensity workout is on the belly—specifically, on holding the abs steady while shaking and rocking the hips. Instructors may add jazz and ballet moves such as the relevé, plié, and pirouette to flesh out the dance combinations and tone the entire body.

Vegas jazz: It’s a moderately challenging, showy version of traditional jazz dance, with a focus on stick-straight posture. (That’s how those Las Vegas showgirls keep their elaborate headdresses in place!) Pretend you’re starring in your own Vegas show as you rehearse short sequences of jazz staples such as high-line kicks and ball steps to classic tunes such as Peggy Lee’s “Fever.” Then link the moves to make up a complete performance. Your abs, back, butt, and legs get the best of this workout.

Cardio salsa: This low-impact but high-intensity workout combines precise, fast-paced Latin choreography— merengue, mambo, cha-cha, samba—with traditional aerobic dance steps, lunges, and arm raises. Much of the action is centered on the glutes and core.

DVDs: Crunch: Cardio Salsa; Dance Fitness for Beginners with Joby “Brava”: Havana Heat Workout & Latin Dance Instruction; and Latin Grooves: Latin Dance Workout (www.amazon.com)
